Neuropathy - dysfunction of peripheral nerves

Neuropathy is the disease of one or more peripheral nerves.

 

The central nervous system is the complex communication network that transmits information from the brain and spinal cord to every part of the body.  Peripheral nerves send sensory information back to the brain through the spinal cord, such as a message that your feet are cold or that your hand is burning.

 

The symptoms of neuropathy can range from: no symptoms, to numbness and/or tingling sensations (for example, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), through to chronic pain.  Symptoms depend on the cause, degree and duration of the nerve compression and can be caused by: fractures; obstructions within the musculoskeletal structure; diabetes and tumours.
